Political expert: Margvelashvili's election as President is a good chance for Armenia to deepen its relations with Georgia
 Wednesday, October 30 2013 14:30

Giorgy Margvelashvili's election as President has ended the cohabitation of different political forces in Georgia, political expert, Director of
the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan told journalists on Wednesday.

"Psychologically Margvelashvili was elected not because he is a charismatic personality but because he is associated with Birdzina Ivanishvili and his Georgian Dream party," Iskandaryan said.

He believes that Margvelashvili will seek association with the European Union but will also try to normalize relations with Russia and, in this context, with Armenia, who can help him in the matter.

"So, Margvelashvili's election is a good chance for Armenia to deepen its relations with Georgia," Iskandaryan said.

President of Football Federation of Armenia advises mass media to support Minister of Sport instead of slating him
 Wednesday, October 30 2013 14:27

I strongly advise all mass media to stop slating Sport and Youth Minister Yuri Vardanyan for the faults of his son and to give him support at this hard time in his life, President of the Football Federation of Armenia Ruben Hayrapetyan told journalists on Wednesday.

"Of course, you are free to criticize whoever you like, but my opinion is that Yuri Vardanyan is a living legend, a person who is doing his best to revive our sports, and we must try to support rather than hinder him. As far as I know, he himself is tired of his sons' tricks. I wish nobody faces such things in life," Hayrapetyan said.

To remind, the son of Yuri Vardanyan (Olympic champion in weightlifting, currently Armenia's Sport and Youth Minister) David Vardanyan has been detained on the Armenian-Iranian border on suspicion of drug smuggling.

Artak Budaghyan's lawyer is going to bring the case to the court
 Wednesday, October 30 2013 14:21

Though Artak Budaghyan is included in the amnesty, his defense attorney Hayk Alumyan is going to bring the case to the court, Alumyan himself said at a press conference in Yerevan on Wednesday.

"The investigation body is deliberately delaying the investigation in order to dismiss the case. However, we will bring the case to the court", he stressed. He added that non-edited video materials recently uploaded in the Internet clearly demonstrate that Avetik Budaghyan's murder was not a result of self-defense of the son of ex-governor of Syunik region Surik Khachatryan.

Alumyan touched on Avetik Budaghyan's actions before the moment Tigran Khachatryan started to shoot. "The record shows that Budaghyan's actions contained no aggression, but the investigation body is trying to prove that when shooting at Budaghyan Tigran Khachatryan was acting for purposes of self-defense", he said and
added that the record of the incident presented to the public is edited. "Moreover, Avetik Budaghyan's body has an injury and the investigators cannot explain its origin. The thing is that the track of the bullet is vertically down, i.e. someone was shooting from the building, the shooter was not among the incident participants. Artak Budaghyan insists that he saw the shot fired from the house", Alumyan said.

To recall, shootouts in front of Syunik Governor Suren Khachatryan's house at 00:10am on June 2 killed former candidate for Goris mayor Avo Budaghyan and wounded his brother Artak Budaghyan (who was in a grave situation currently), a commander at a military unit in NKR.  There was another wounded, Nikolay Abrahamyan, a relative and
bodyguard of Governor S. Khachartyan. A criminal case was initiated on the basis of Article 103.1 (murder) and Article 235 (illegal use, storage and bearing weapons) of the Criminal Code of Armenia. Syunik Governor Suren Khachatryan's son, Tigran Khachatryan, was arrested over the latest shootouts in Syunik. Earlier, the governor's
bodyguard Zarzand Nikoghosyan was arrested over the case. Suren Khachatryan sent in his resignation. On September 7 the criminal case against Tigran Khachatryan and Zarzand Nikoghosyan was dismissed. Charges on attacking Khachatryan's house were filed against Artak Budaghyan. However, the case was later dismissed, because Budaghyan was included in the amnesty.

Russian parliamentarians agree that Russian arms supply to Azerbaijan creates problems in the region
 Wednesday, October 30 2013 09:59

Russian parliamentarians agree that delivery of Russian arms to Azerbaijan creates problems in the region, Armenian parliamentarian, Leader of Free Democrats Party Khachatur Kokobelyan told reporters after today's meeting of the two-day session of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Committee for Security and Defense that kicked off in Yerevan on 30 October.

Kokobelyan said he raised the issue of the Russian arms supply to Azerbaijan at the meeting and said that such arms deals do not contribute to security and stability in the region.

"Substantially, the CSTO cannot be considered as a serious structure if the Russian-Azerbaijani arms deal for $4 bln is introduced just as a 'business project'. Our Russian counterparts agree that this is a really serious problem that needs thorough discussion," Kokobelyan said. The parliamentarian also called it strange that the final
document to be adopted after the session touched upon external threats the region has faced, including Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and other conflicts, without a single word on the Russian-Georgian war, the Abkhazian, South Ossetian and Nagorno Karabakh issues.
